Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on a hunger strike in prison since early October, asked to meet with the Ukrainian consul. This was announced on Friday, November 19, by the deputy Ekaterina Kherkheulidze, transfers “Sputnik Georgia”.
“He asked [тюремную] administration to invite the consul of Ukraine and lawyer Nika Gvaramia. Until they come, and together with us he does not make a decision, he will not leave here, ”said Kherkheulidze.
The Justice Ministry had previously offered to move Saakashvili from a prison hospital in Tbilisi to a military hospital in Gori. The head of the Ministry of Justice noted that this requires the consent of the prisoner himself.
The Georgian ombudsman’s office reported that the doctors who visited Saakashvili found he had a serious brain disease, due to which the ex-president could fall into a coma and die. The day before, the politician fainted at a meeting with lawyers.
Mikhail Saakashvili was detained in Georgia on October 1 after he returned after eight years of emigration. Earlier, he was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for the murder of a banker and beating of a deputy.
