Rwanda remains committed to receiving migrants sent by the United Kingdom after the cancellation of the first flight scheduled for Tuesday by a last-minute European court decision, the government spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
“We are not discouraged by these events. Rwanda remains fully committed to making this alliance work,” government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo told AFP.
“Rwanda remains prepared to receive migrants when they arrive and to offer security and opportunities in our country,” he added.
The British government wants to send migrants to this East African country, which is 6,500 km from London, to discourage illegal arrivals across the English Channel, a plan criticized by NGOs and called “immoral” by the Anglican Church.
The first flight with at least 10 undocumented migrants was scheduled for Tuesday but was canceled at the last minute after several court appeals and an urgent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.
