More than 450 volunteers from several Russian regions will take part in cleaning up the shores of Lake Baikal this summer. This is reported TASS with reference to the press service of the Russian Environmental Operator (REO).
As noted, in total, three large-scale actions will be held in the summer period, during which volunteers will be able to help clean up the coastal area of the lake, which is most affected by the anthropogenic influence of tourists. It is expected that REO volunteers, students of universities and colleges, as well as residents of Buryatia and the Irkutsk region will join the cleaning.
“Baikal is a natural pearl of Russia. The tourist potential of this place is undeniable. But at the same time, this threatens to increase the amount of waste, which means it can harm the ecology of this unique place,” said Denis Butsaev, head of the REO.
He added that by the end of this year, the organization plans to attract more than 10,000 volunteers throughout Russia to its actions. In particular, volunteers will be invited to participate in subbotniks and other environmental events.
