Russian scientists have uncovered the effect of coronavirus on the eyes. According to them, the infection can affect this organ, which contributes to the deterioration of vision and the appearance of spots in front of the eyes. About it writes RBC.
Alexey Agranovsky, a virologist, professor at Moscow State University, Doctor of Biological Sciences, noted that blood clots can form in blood vessels due to COVID-19. “The history of this epidemic is too short to draw definitive conclusions, but this is the impression one gets. COVID-19 infection can affect blood vessels (this is just a fairly well-known phenomenon), including the eye vessels, causing microthrombi and symptoms of spots and visual impairment, ”the expert explained.
His colleague, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the RUDN University Sergei Voznesensky, added that coronavirus can infect nerve cells. Also, with a severe course of the disease, an infectious syndrome occurs, accompanied by headaches and high fever, which can also negatively affect visual acuity. The specialist explained that in any place where blood clots form, the functional activity of this tissue decreases.
