Prosecutors have also asked the court to transfer Navalny to another maximum-security prison. He received his current sentence for violating his parole in an old corruption case. The opposition leader had to report to the authorities, but he was unable to do so because he was being treated in Germany for poisoning – probably by Russia itself.
In August 2020, he became ill during a domestic flight from Siberia to Moscow, passed out in a hospital in Omsk and was flown from there to Germany, where doctors determined he had been poisoned. Investigative collective Bellingcat concluded earlier after examining telephone data and travel data that the Russian secret service, the FSB, was responsible. Putin denies this.
Just over a year ago, Navalny returned to Russia, where he was immediately arrested by the Russian authorities upon arrival at the airport. In January this year, he was added to the list of terrorists and extremists by the Russian authorities. Several allies of the prominent Kremlin critic are also new to that list.
