Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in the early hours of Thursday (24) a military operation in Ukraine, claiming that it is intended to protect civilians.
In a lengthy televised speech, Putin said the move came in response to threats from Ukraine. He added that Russia does not aim to occupy Ukraine and that responsibility for the bloodshed lies with the Ukrainian “regime”.

The Russian president warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with Russian action would lead to “consequences they have never seen”. He accused the US and its allies of ignoring Russia’s demand to bar Ukraine from joining NATO and offer security guarantees to Moscow.
Putin also said that the Russian military operation aims to ensure a “demilitarization” of Ukraine. Putin said that all Ukrainian military personnel who lay down their weapons will be able to safely leave the combat zone.
There was no immediate reaction from the White House to Putin’s comments, but US officials repeatedly promised to impose crushing sanctions on the Russian economy and Putin’s allies in retaliation for a new invasion of Ukraine.
