The Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) has expelled Tinkoff – the Russian Premier League (RPL) and Olympus – the Football National League (FNL) from the organization, reported on March 4 in release.
It is noted that this decision was made due to the situation around Ukraine.
The association also expressed hope for a speedy stabilization of the situation.
On March 3, it became known that the Russian Football Union (RFU) will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne against the decision taken by FIFA and UEFA to remove the Russian national teams from participation in international competitions.
On February 28, the RFU called illegitimate the decision of FIFA and UEFA to remove the Russian national teams from the competition. It is discriminatory and harms the sports community, the union said.
The decision of FIFA and UEFA to remove national teams and clubs from the Russian Federation from participation in all competitions became known earlier that day. As the organizations assured, football will become a “vector of unity and peace between peoples” if the situation in Ukraine improves.
Then on Monday, February 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special operation to protect Donbass. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated significantly due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help.
