Three Russian cosmonauts drew attention on Friday (18) when they arrived at the International Space Station wearing yellow suits with blue details, the same colors as the Ukrainian flag. The choice raised questions about a possible mention of the war, but Russia denied the relationship on Saturday (19).
Images from the Russian space agency Roscosmos show cosmonauts Oleg Artemiev, Denis Matveiev and Sergei Korsakov entering the space station, dressed in yellow. In addition to the blue details, the costumes also had the colors of the Russian flag.
When he was able to communicate with the family, Artemiev said teams can choose what to wear from a stockpile of gear. “We actually had a lot of yellow material, so we had to use it,” he explained.
Through its Telegram channel, the Roscosmos press office denied that the clothes were any subliminal message about the invasion of Ukraine. “The new crew’s flight suits are made in the colors of the emblem of Moscow’s Bauman State Technical University, from which the three cosmonauts graduated. Seeing the Ukrainian flag everywhere and in everything is crazy,” read an excerpt from the text reproduced by Estadão.
