Russian attack Unconfirmed reports: Russian Security Service Chief of FSB Foreign Intelligence Department under house arrest

According to media reports, one of the reasons for the arrest would have been the deliberate misrepresentation of the situation in Ukraine.

Several media sources such as the Russian-language news site headquartered in Riga, the capital of Latvia Jellyfisha British newspaper The Times and British Broadcasting Corporation BBC say two members of the Russian security service FSB have been placed under house arrest.

Another of those arrested is reportedly Sergei Beseda, Head of the FSB ‘s International Intelligence Unit, Unit 5. The other is said to have been his deputy director Anatoli Bolyukh.

The department is responsible for collecting intelligence from Ukraine. Reports are pending.

Under house arrest reported by specialists in Russian espionage agencies Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan.

According to Meduza, the reasons for the arrest would be, among other things, the embezzlement of funds intended for espionage in Ukraine and the deliberate misrepresentation of the political situation in Ukraine.

“It seems that after two weeks of war, Putin finally realized that he had simply been misled: the 5th Service was afraid to outrage the leader, and delivered him what he himself wanted to hear,” Soldatov and Borogan said.

Besedan the team is believed to have planned a coup in Ukraine, where the country’s administration would have been replaced by a pro-Russian regime, but without regard for Ukrainian resistance, writes BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera.

“If the allegations about their arrest are true, this suggests that Putin is seriously concerned about the FSB’s role in the military campaign and that there may be significant changes at the high level of the FSB,” a Western source said.

The large amounts of intelligence that Western countries have received about Russia’s plans to invade Ukraine could also spark fear of espionage in the Kremlin, the BBC said.
