Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered authorities on Wednesday to take control of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia, in southern Ukraine.

“The administration will ensure that the core functions of the facility become the property of the federal government,” the order said.

In the future, the nuclear power plant will operate under the supervision of Russian agencies. According to the Reuters news agency, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the matter on Wednesday after Putin had signed a law on the “annexation” of Ukrainian territories to Russia.

The nuclear power plant is located in the Zaporizhia region, which is one of the four regions affected by the annexation. The power plant is operated by the Ukrainian state nuclear power company Energoatom. Russian troops have been occupying a nuclear power plant near the front line since March.

The Russian news agency Tass reported earlier on Wednesday that the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA Rafael Grossi will visit Moscow in the next few days. The purpose of the visit is to discuss the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and the creation of a possible safety zone around the plant.
