Russian attack | Russia must send quality against quantity, says a German expert on Leopard tanks

Germany’s position will decide whether Ukraine will receive efficient Leopard 2 battle tanks, which many politicians in Finland would be willing to take.

Berlin

Pressure The issue of battle tanks is now growing towards Germany for two reasons, says a professor at the University of the German Armed Forces Carlo Masala.

The main reason is the January 20 allied meeting at the US military base in Ramstein, Germany.

The third US-led Ramstein meeting is to decide on new armed support for Ukraine as Russia destroys Ukraine’s infrastructure with its continuous attacks.

There is currently a lot of interest in heavy battle tanks. They would be necessary for Ukraine in the battles in which it tries to take back the territories occupied by Russia.

“It’s about the fact that you can fight Russia’s quantity with quality. Russia has old tanks that it throws to the front. We have to send weapon systems that are of better quality than them,” Masala told HS on Tuesday.

According to Masala, based on the stock situation of the armed forces, Germany could export 10–15 or at most 20 Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Also Finland has the same tanks in its warehouses. Their export to Ukraine has been supported by many Finnish politicians, if the operation is carried out together with other countries.

In the spring, Germany started the so-called “tire exchange”, in which it has handed over Leopard-type tanks to the allied countries as compensation for taking old Soviet tanks from their warehouses to Ukraine.

Ukraine has long said that it especially needs modern Western-made tanks.

According to Carlo Masala, the West should help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s quantity with quality.

On Monday Sky News reported that Britain is considering taking about ten Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. Challenger 2 corresponds to Leopard 2 in terms of features.

Due to arms export agreements, the export of Leopards from other countries also requires German approval, as it is a German-made weapon.

State Secretary of the President of Poland Jakub Kumoch said on Mondaythat Poland could export a dozen Leopards to Ukraine.

According to the spokesperson of the German government, Germany has not yet received official requests from Poland or other countries to deliver Leopards to Ukraine.

Last a kind of floodgate opened last week, when the allies decided for the first time on the export of Western-made armored vehicles to Ukraine. In Germany, the decision has been described as breaking a taboo.

Germany announced last Thursday to export 40 Marder type assault tanks to Ukraine. It was preceded by announcements from France and the United States about the export of similar vehicles to Ukraine.

These lighter tanks would be able to protect battle tanks in a counterattack against Russia if Ukraine got them.

Masala points out that the Leopard 2 is not a “miracle weapon” that would solve Ukraine’s victory over Russia. It would be important for success to know how to use them effectively.

In that case, they could be of great benefit in recapturing lost territories.

Masala according to another reason for the growing pressure on Germany is the historically important and close relationship between Germany and France.

Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has put the relationship to the test. It has been estimated to be cooler than usual in recent months.

On January 22nd, Germany and France celebrate the “Friendship Day”, marking the 60th anniversary of the signing of the friendship treaty between the two countries, known as the Élysée Treaty.

Media information according to France is currently trying to influence Germany to “liberate the Leopards”.

In Germany, many experts noted last week that the countries made their main decision to send armored vehicles to Ukraine on consecutive days and not at the same time.
