Sanctions may include the exclusion of a country from the Swift payment system.
The EU is preparing for a third set of sanctions against Russia, a diplomatic source told Reuters.
The content of the sanctions is not yet known, but it may include a decision to exclude Russia from the Swift payment system. According to sources in the news agency AFP, EU foreign ministers will meet on Sunday to discuss new sanctions.
Based on previous HS data, the exclusion decision was previously opposed by Germany, Italy and Cyprus. On Saturday, however, a French EU authority told Reuters that negotiations on the decision have been completed and no EU country is opposed to the exclusion anymore.
German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock and the Minister of Economic Affairs Robert Habeck In their joint statement, Germany said that it was in favor of “targeted and effective” restrictions on Swift. According to German ministers, the measures should have the least possible impact on bystanders.
The United Kingdom Britain has been prepared to exclude Russia from the Swift payment system in the past, but they have agreed to follow the same line as the EU.
Ukraine has been demanding the exclusion of Russia from the payment system for several days.
