According to Ukraine, five people were wounded in the attack, including an 11-year-old child. As a result of the attack, dozens of buildings are without electricity.

The drones shot down by Russia were Iranian Shahed drones. Shrapnel from the downed drones damaged residential buildings and caused, among other things, a fire in a kindergarten in Kyiv.

The air alert in Kiev lasted six hours.

Ukraine has warned that Russia will likely intensify its attacks like last year as winter approaches. The purpose is to destroy especially Ukraine’s electricity distribution systems when the weather gets colder.

In recent weeks, fighting in Ukraine has focused on Avdijivka in eastern Ukraine, which has been almost completely surrounded by Russian forces.

Ukraine has demanded more weapons from the West for its defensive war against Russia. However, global attention has recently been focused on the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Attack happened on the day Ukraine celebrates the Holodomor Memorial Day. The Holodomor was a famine experienced in Ukraine in the 1930s, which was caused by the policies of the Soviet leadership. It killed millions of people.

“More than 70 Shahed planes on the night before Holodomor Memorial Day — Russian leadership is proud that it can kill,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi wrote on social media.

He also said that the Holodomor’s “crimes leading to genocide” are impossible to forgive.

For example, the EU Parliament has defined the Holodomor as genocide.
