The first spacecraft “Glonass-K2” of the new generation of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) may be launched in the second quarter of 2022, reports TASS, citing a source in the rocket and space industry.
“The launch of the Russian navigation satellite Glonass-K2 is planned to be carried out in the middle of the second quarter of 2022,” the source said. The source added that the spacecraft is currently assembled and undergoing testing.
In October, the general director of Information Satellite Systems Nikolai Testoedov said that the creation of new Glonass-K2 satellites cost Roscosmos twice as much as the previous generation Glonass-K spacecraft, and called it an absolutely natural process.
November 2020 RIA News, referring to the materials of “Roskosmos”, reported that the new satellites “Glonass-K2” were four times more expensive than their predecessors.
