The Italian oil and gas company Eni said today, Saturday, that Russia has stopped gas shipments to Italy for the time being.
And the Italian oil company announced, in a statement, “Gazprom informed us that it could not confirm the delivery of the required quantities today (Saturday), citing the impossibility of transporting gas through Austria.”
Russian gas usually arrives and is distributed from the town of “Tarvisio” on the border between Italy and Austria.
“Therefore, the flows of Russian gas destined for Eni through the Tarvisio entry point will be zero,” the Italian company added, on Saturday.
Most of the Russian gas delivered to Italy passes through Ukraine through the TAG gas pipeline to Tarvisio in the north of the country, on the border with Austria.
The Italian news agency quoted an Eni spokesman as saying that “Gazprom confirms that it is unable to comply with the obligations necessary to obtain gas distribution service in Austria, as it must deliver it.”
“We are checking with Gazprom whether it is possible to re-move the flows to Italy,” the spokesman added.
Russian gas exports to Europe have fallen steadily since the start of sanctions against Russia.
Eni announced, in early March, that it would sell its 50 percent stake in the Blue Stream gas pipeline, which it controls equally with Russia’s Gazprom.
