Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalnyi has been transferred to a “strictly disciplined penitentiary,” Navalny’s allies said late Tuesday, according to news agency AFP. Navalny’s allies also expressed concern about the safety of the opposition leader.
Earlier on Tuesday, Navalny spokesman Kira Jarmyš said Twitterwith his account that Navalnyi has been transferred to an “unknown place” from the penitentiary where he has served his prison sentence.
According to AFP, the Russian authorities have not disclosed the location of Navalny’s new penitentiary, but the new location is believed to be more severe than his previous prison in Pokrov.
Navalnyiä the lawyer who came to the meeting was told, according to Jarmysh, that Navalnyi was not imprisoned in that penitentiary.
“We don’t know where he is and to which penitentiary he has been transferred,” he says.
According to Jarmysh, the transfer of Navalny has not been notified to his lawyers or relatives.
“As long as we don’t know where he is, he’s alone at the mercy of a system that has already tried to kill him. Our main task now is to find him as soon as possible, ”Jarmyš said.
46 years old Navalnyi is Russia’s most famous president Vladimir Putin opponents of the regime. He was arrested early last year when he returned to Russia from Germany. He had been in Germany recovering and rehabilitating from the poisoning he has blamed on Putin and the Russian security service, the FSB.
In February, Navalnyi was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for parole. In March, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for embezzlement and contempt of court.
According to Navalny supporters, his sentences are political and related to open opposition to the Putin regime.
