After the serious accident in a Russian coal mine with 52 dead, the first corpses were recovered.
Kemerovo – Three dead miners and three dead rescuers have been lifted from the shaft, said the governor of the Kemerovo region, Sergei Tsivilev, on Friday in the news channel Telegram. Experts reckon that, due to the risk of explosion, it could take days before all bodies are recovered from the pit.
In the mine in western Siberia there was an explosion on Thursday morning for an initially unknown cause. At that time, according to the Russian civil protection minister Alexander Tschuprijan, 285 people were in the mine and 239 workers were rescued from the “Listwjaschnaja” shaft in the Kuznetsk coal basin (Kuzbass). “This is a great tragedy for the whole country,” said Chuprijan on Friday. According to local health authorities, none of the 50 or so injured who are being treated in hospitals are in mortal danger. According to Tschuprijan, air samples should be taken underground to determine whether there is still a risk of explosion. “The inspection of the mine is not a question of a day.”
Meanwhile, there were further arrests. In addition to the mine director and two leading employees, two state experts who checked the shaft just a week ago had also been taken into custody, the investigative committee said. (dpa)
