Russia has shown willingness to lift the naval blockade on Ukrainian grain exports.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Turkey next Wednesday, June 8, to address the possible opening of a safe route for ships exporting grain and other food from the Black Sea.

This was stated by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Çavusoglu, in an interview with the ‘Anadolu’ news agency, in which he assured that Lavrov will travel accompanied by a military delegation. “The opening of a humanitarian corridor for ships in the Black Sea that transport food” is one of the items on the agenda of the visit, according to Çavusoglu.

Ukraine has criticized the Russian naval blockade of its coasts because it prevents it from exporting millions of tons of grain that it has stored
which could lead to famine in the coming months.

Russia has been willing to lift the naval blockade on Ukrainian grain exports in exchange for the lifting of certain Western sanctions against Moscow.

In a recent telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Moscow expressed its willingness to facilitate the maritime transit of goods through the Black Sea in cooperation with Ankara. The meeting will also address other bilateral and regional issues such as the situation in Syria and Turkey’s ambition to control a border strip throughout the north of that country to protect themselves against the YPG Kurdish militias.

Russia is the main ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey supports armed factions seeking to overthrow him and is also fighting the YPG, which maintains a tense neutral relationship with the Assad regime.
