Diplomat Polyansky: We hope that Kyiv is smart enough not to fire at the IAEA mission
Russia hopes that the Kyiv security forces will be smart enough not to fire on the IAEA mission at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). This was stated by the First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky, reports RIA News.
The diplomat noted that there are groups in the Armed Forces of Ukraine that are not subordinate to the supreme command. “There were such examples, it worries us a lot,” he said.
On August 25, the State Duma Council called on the UN and the IAEA to demand that Kyiv immediately stop shelling the Zaporizhzhya NPP. It was pointed out that the shelling of infrastructure facilities could lead to their destruction, which carries the “danger of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination and a man-made disaster.”
On August 11, UN Secretary General António Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the area of the nuclear power plant. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response, condemned the position of the UN and said that Guterres did not directly appeal to the Ukrainian authorities.
