Telecommunication company “VimpelCom” proposed to the Ministry of Digital Industry to consider the possibility of introducing a ban on the import, installation and operation of household cellular signal amplifiers (repeaters) except for cellular operators and their authorized organizations. They write about it “News” with reference to the director of regulatory affairs of the operator Konstantin Zudin.
The ministry confirmed to the publication that they received this appeal. According to the head of the department of state regulation of the telecommunications market of the Ministry of Digital Industry Dmitry Tur, the department treats with understanding the complaints of operators about repeaters.
“Indeed, amplifiers are used in violation of the rules for their use. We are in a dialogue with the market, and we are working with the departments to work out measures aimed at excluding this kind of use, ”said Dmitry Tur, without specifying which measures and departments are being discussed.
Repeaters are small devices that are installed in summer cottages, apartments or offices with an unsatisfactory cellular signal. As participants in the cellular market explained, these gadgets, especially those made in China, jam the cellular signal, interfering with subscribers, and are able to drown out an entire summer cottage village and interfere with the operation of base stations.
According to Vadim Poskakukhin, project manager of Spectrum Management, the number of repeaters increased during the pandemic, when people moved to self-isolation outside the city. If installed incorrectly, the devices could turn into jammers.
Konstantin Zudin noted that the State Commission on Radio Frequencies banned the use of repeaters for someone other than operators and authorized organizations back in 2012, but this requirement is poorly observed. Therefore, the experts interviewed by the publication call VimpelCom’s initiative worthy of discussion.
