The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said that Moscow opposes the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the newspaper writes News.
At the same time, according to the department, the goal of building a nuclear-free world in Russia is shared.
“The NPT contradicts our vision of how to move towards nuclear disarmament. We respect the position of countries advocating an early ban on nuclear weapons, and have always confirmed that we share the goal of building a nuclear-free world, ”the Foreign Ministry explained.
The ministry urged to approach the task of nuclear disarmament soberly and step by step, as a long-term goal. It is emphasized that it is necessary to strengthen strategic stability and take into account the security interests of all countries.
Earlier it was reported that NATO member countries expressed disagreement with the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) because of its contradictions to the existing architecture of disarmament.
As a reminder, the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty entered into force on January 22. As of today, 51 countries have ratified it, the nuclear powers do not participate in the document.
The treaty stipulates the obligation of the parties not to develop or use nuclear weapons under any circumstances, and also not to deploy nuclear weapons of other countries on the territory of their country.
