In Russia the court has banned Facebook and Instagram from operating “on the basis of extremist content”.

In contrast, the parent company Meta’s Whatsapp messaging service could not be banned because it is not a public application platform.

The Russian news agency Tass and the British newspaper The Guardian report on the matter.

Previously Russian authorities had accused Meta of tolerating “Russophobia” during the Ukrainian war.

Earlier, in mid-March, authorities blocked Russians from accessing Instagram. The image service has only been accessed through a VPN proxy server.

Correction 21.3. at 10:24 p.m .: The court did not define Meta as an extremist organization, as the article had previously erroneously claimed.
