The Russian government has completely banned citizens of ten countries from entering the country due to the spread of the omicron strain of the coronavirus. The corresponding order signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin posted on the portal of legal information.
Thus, residents of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Eswatini, South Africa, as well as the special administrative region of Hong Kong, were banned from entering Russia. Prior to this, restrictions on entry into Russia did not apply to diplomats and holders of service passports, as well as to sailors, aircraft crew members and train drivers with guides.
On December 10, Professor of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, molecular biologist Georgy Bazykin warned that a new peak of the epidemic could begin in Russia due to the omicron strain of the coronavirus. According to the expert, omicron, judging by the dynamics of distribution in Africa and the UK, is able to quickly displace the delta. He suggested that with an outbreak of a new strain in Russia, it would be a matter of weeks or months. “Unfortunately, less than one case out of a thousand genomes are read in Russia among all infections. Therefore, the omicron may already be here, although we do not see it yet, ”he added.
