Both countries refused to pay in rubles to Moscow
The Russian state gas company Gazprom announced on Tuesday the cessation of supplies to Poland and Bulgaria due to the refusal of the respective countries to pay in rubles. Thus, Gazprom notified both countries that, as of April 27, “the supply of Russian natural gas will be completely stopped” once confirmation has been received from the Polish energy company PNGiG and the Bulgarian company Bulgargaz about their refusal to pay for services in rubles.
At the end of March, the Russian government signed a decree establishing that payment for the Russian gas pipeline supplied from April should be made exclusively in rubles, the Russian agency Interfax recalls. However, from PNGiG they warned that they consider the Russian decision as a “violation” of the terms of the contract, for which they announced that they will present claims through which “the supply of natural gas under the contract is restored,” according to what is collected. the Russian agency TASS.
“In turn, the company reserves the right to file claims in relation to the aforementioned interruption of the natural gas supply and will use all its contractual rights, as well as the rights derived from the legal provisions, for this purpose,” PNGiG added in a statement.
For their part, from Sofia they assured that the gas supply in Bulgaria is “guaranteed” and that “there is no risk to the country’s energy security.” “We have been preparing for such a scenario for a long time,” defended the government spokeswoman, Lena Borislavova.
