Russian troops have taken control of the city of Kherson, in southern Ukraine, according to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry.
According to the Russian military, in the city, with about 300,000 inhabitants and located on the Dnieper River and on the shores of the Black Sea, “the civil infrastructure and public transport function normally.”

Kiev reported in the early hours of Tuesday about the beginning of the Russian assault on Kherson, near the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014.
According to international media, this would be the first large city that the Russians manage to control.
Strategically located on the Dniepr River, the provincial capital would be the largest city to fall to Russian forces so far.
According to the latest report from the Russian military, since the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 1,502 Ukrainian military infrastructure targets have been destroyed.
“47 aircraft were killed on the ground and 11 in the air,” adds the military note.

Russian forces also destroyed 472 Ukrainian tanks and other armor, as well as 62 multiple missile launchers and 206 artillery pieces and mortars.
Russia assured that in Kherson there is no shortage of food and essential items.
“Negotiations continue with the Russian command and the local administration to resolve issues related to the operation of social infrastructure facilities, as well as to ensure order and safety of the population,” Defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
