The withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria could destabilize the situation in the region, as Moldova is likely to try to return the territory by force. This assessment was made by the deputy director of the Institute of Political and Military Analysis Alexander Khramchikhin, reports RBC.
Thus, Khramchikhin commented on the proposal of the elected President of Moldova Maya Sandu. According to him, the Moldovan army is weaker than the Transnistrian army, but Romania and Ukraine can help it. In addition, the expert believes that the complexity of the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeepers will depend on the legal aspects of the process.
The expert of the Association of Military Political Scientists Andrei Koshkin called the withdrawal of the peacekeepers a serious project that cannot be solved quickly and should lead to clearly defined consequences – stability, not complexity. Koshkin believes that Sandu’s election rhetoric was tolerant and promising, she was ready for dialogue with Russia.
The former President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, called Sandu’s statement on the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria a serious mistake. As the head of state pointed out, the anti-Russian policy will have a detrimental effect on Moldova, as well as on the policy that will pursue it.
Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, in turn, recalled that Russian peacekeepers ensure security in Transnistria. “Their presence has been serving as a guarantee of peace in the region and the protection of people living there for almost 30 years,” Pushkov said. He added that 220 thousand of them are Russian citizens, and their safety “is more important than the loud statements of the new President of Moldova.”
On the eve, Maia Sandu said that the “soft approach” in the negotiations on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict was not effective. She believes that the status of Transnistria after reintegration has yet to be found. She opposed the federalization of Moldova, previously proposed by the incumbent President Igor Dodon. According to her, the format for resolving the conflict should include the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Moldova.
