Member of the Federation Council Alexey Pushkov in his Telegram-channel appreciated the words of the former adviser to US President Ronald Reagan Suzanne Massie about the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, devoted to NATO.
As Massy noted, the situation in 1990, when Gorbachev said that an agreement had been reached between him and the NATO countries not to expand the North Atlantic Alliance to the East, and later this information was not confirmed, became “an element of great betrayal.”
“Another confirmation that NATO leaders deceived Moscow in the early 1990s, promising not to expand the alliance eastward, and even more so – right up to our borders. Therefore, when the West accuses Russia of “lack of trust,” they need to be reminded of this story every time, ”Pushkov wrote.
Earlier, Massy said that Gorbachev fell victim to the atmosphere of trust that arose during the reign of US President Ronald Reagan. “But the story with NATO and the agreement is already George W. Bush, not Reagan, another administration and, unfortunately, other people. I am very ashamed of this story, ”said Massy.
