The first part of the 2022 season is turning out to be a nightmare for the Mercedes under the profile of porpoising, suffered particularly heavily by both drivers of the reigning world champion team. However, despite this not indifferent aspect, the Anglo-German house can still celebrate the podium conquered by George Russellthe third for him after the one obtained in Australia and Spain.
Yet despite this 3rd place – exactly as happened in Melbourne and Barcelona – the English driver does not seem completely satisfied with the result, which materialized mainly following the retirement of Sainz and Leclerc’s Ferraris. In the direct confrontation between Mercedes and the Maranello team, moreover, Russell is now ‘only’ 17 points behind Leclerc, with the three-pointed star having even won more points than the Red in the last five races: “In a championship often prevails whoever wins points in every single race – explained Russell in the press conference after the GP – everyone at Mercedes has done a great job of providing a reliable car, but we cannot continue to rely on the misfortune of others and we must find more performance. And that’s what everyone is trying to achieve, but this in Baku is a third place which, to be honest, is more of a 5th for what our pace was. “
The fact remains that, even in Azerbaijan, Mercedes once again had to face problems related to porpoisingto such an extent that Russell himself did not deny a possible change of concept at Mercedes for the rest of the championship: “We need to have an open mind about everything and approach things logically and analytically, and I believe that at this stage nothing is out of the question – admitted the British – we are just trying to come up with a car that is the fastest on the lap, but porpoising hasn’t been that bad this weekend. We had hardly any problems, but we are struggling to achieve this. So, as I said, we are open to everything, and nothing is excluded. However, we will not have any updates or something to try in Canada, but perhaps for Silverstone we will have a better idea ”.
