Qualifying for the Canadian GP
In a crazy qualifying in Montreal, full of twists and turns with the elimination of Sergio Perez in Q1 and both Ferraris in Q2, George Russell managed to snatch a fantastic pole position giving the first sharp in qualifying to Mercedes from Hungary 2023. The Englishman has mocked Max Verstappen in the most incredible way possible, recording the same time to the thousandth. The Mercedes standard bearer, however, put him on the scoresheet shortly before and this earned him the start at the pole.
One appears behind the first two second row all McLaren, with Norris ahead of Piastri, and a surprise third row, with Daniel Ricciardo fifth and Fernando Alonso sixth. Lewis Hamilton was only seventh in the second Mercedes, ahead of Tsunoda, Stroll and Albon.
The words of the top-3
George Russell (1st, Mercedes): “I’m very happy. A lot of work in the factory brought us here. We saw in Monaco that perhaps something had changed for our season and today it really is a fantastic feeling. Every time we come here it’s a fantastic atmosphere. Today we took the first step, but we have to complete the work tomorrow. We have to aim for victory. Keep Max behind? Why not! We’ll try. The car felt fantastic. We brought updates to Monaco and now we feel we are fighting. We will definitely attack tomorrow.”.
Max Verstappen (2nd, Red Bull): “The weekend was complicated for us, so I gladly accept second place. I would have signed at the beginning of qualifying for this placement. We are close, this makes tomorrow’s race exciting. In Monaco I didn’t feel bad, but the track didn’t work for our car. We haven’t prepared this weekend very well so far either, but tomorrow we’ll have to see how we manage the tires. The weather will also be a factor, with rain continuing to come and go. Departure? We’ll think about it, I’m not too stressed about it.”
Lando Norris (3rd, McLaren): “Congrats to Russell, he’s been fast all weekend so far. I’m happy with third place, when you come so close you always think you could have done something more, but I’m happy. Rain threat? Yes, you had to give everything every lap, but this is Montreal. This is one of the most beautiful circuits to race at, I love coming here every year. The track is complicated, you risk having an accident every moment. Do you need two overtakes to win tomorrow? Yes, they will be easy. Jokes aside, I’ll have a lot to work on. But I’m enthusiastic: the car goes well, we’re in a good period. We have two riders in front and many fast riders in the back. Tomorrow will be a great show”.
