George Russell gave the first interview as an official driver of the Mercedes Formula 1 team a few hours ago and did so on the evening in which McLaren presented its MCL36, the car with which he will race in the 2022 World Championship. Disruptive action or simple programming to begin the approach to the presentation of the F1 W13 E Performance, it is not known.
It is certain, however, that attention has rightly fallen on the new single-seater from Woking. Yet Russell is not to be underestimated. He knows the Mercedes environment very well and for several years already for having been the first junior driver of the German company and then also the owner of the 2020 Sakhir GP, called to replace Lewis Hamilton.
“I spent a really long time with the team before joining Williams, as a starter driver, in Formula 1. This is why I feel like I already know everyone in the world, there is nothing new.”
“For this reason we were able to get straight to the point of the matter. We started working on the important aspects of the season, that is to try to understand the new car, the new challenges we will have to face, and try to prepare as best we can for 2022”, Russell said in an interview with the Mercedes website.
“I think that after the finale of last season, there is a lot of motivation inside Mercedes, a fire that burns inside everyone in the factory to try to redeem themselves. For me it is really incredible to see all this in person.”
Mercedes and Russell: step-by-step growth
In these days Russell has been able to see the F1 W13 E Performance born, but also to discover the shapes of some of the rival single-seaters. Although he was able to make a first impression, George is completely focused on himself, on his performance, because he will have the task of not making Valtteri Bottas regret, but also of doing better than the Finn, helping Mercedes to continue the Constructors’ World Championship.
“My hope for 2022 is to get the most out of myself and the team. I think it will be a very interesting development year and I think development will play a key role in this season’s performance.”
“In terms of results, I don’t think I can set goals. Because nobody knows where we will be in the first race, in terms of performance. I will have to give myself micro objectives, little by little, on where to improve myself and the car.”
“If I can get every aspect, every goal that I set myself right, then I will be able to have the best chance of achieving great goals,” concluded Russell.
