The last two weeks are certainly not spent in the name of civilization and respect in the world of Formula 1, tainted by some facts that have raised serious doubts about certain human values: from the racist epithets pronounced by Jüri Vips and Nelson Piquet – the latter against Lewis Hamilton – to the admissions of Lando Norris on the death threats received on social media, another episode, less serious than the previous ones, has recently been added, but far from positive at a sporting level.
Specifically, on the eve of the British Grand Prix weekend, it was George Russell to tell the media about an unprecedented event that occurred in the Montreal pre-race, which particularly troubled him: for the first time in his career, in fact, the Englishman received sound whistles from the stands once his name is spoken. A circumstance that the Mercedes driver told reporters as follows, openly venting for the behavior of some spectators present at the GPs: “When your visibility increases, there are many positives – has explained – but also other negatives. In Montreal, someone shouted my name and whistled at me: I was at the drivers’ parade, and it was a rather strange thing to see that this 35 or 40 year old boy was whistling at me, by the way I don’t even know him. I just try to stay calm and do my best in every race, to put on a good show and to be polite and kind to everyone. There are things to get used to: unfortunately this is the world and the society we live in today. Sportsmen do not deserve to be booed by spectators. This dynamic it must be eliminated. What gives that guy the right to whistle anyone? What gives fans in football stadiums the right to insult players? They are just doing their job, trying their best to have a career. And I think this is the aspect that many people don’t appreciate in this position ”.
In addition, Russell expressed his opinion on what happened to his teammate, victim of racist phrases pronounced in recent days by Nelson Piquet: “I think it’s clear that we all need to do more to eliminate the racism which circulates not only in the world of motorsport, but also in society – commented – I believe the issue goes further, with the social abuse that people experience online. It is good to see that so many have come together and expressed their point of view and their support. I believe we all have a duty to do more. It is shocking to see that this continues today“.
