How many of you at school were they looking forward to half-time? Or even better that the lessons ended, to be able to devote yourself to the most disparate adventures with your classmates? Let’s say that over the years the habits and activities available to children from a very young age have changed a lot compared to those who attended elementary schools during the 90s, and especially in those years, between figurines of Pokémon brand new, metallic toy cars or outdoor activities, it was a foregone conclusion work of imagination and create your own stories or competitions yourself. Going back to these memories, but going a little further, DeskWorks and Aniplex present us the most original RPG Time: The Legend of Wrightwhich we analyze today in review.
A budding dungeon master
In this particular game we will interact with Kentaa small elementary school child, our classmate, who has finally finished his Role playing game! A game that pretends to be a video game, but which has all its features: there will be the interface, the buttons to press, the backdrops, and so on… but it will all be designed, created with cardboard and so on! So here our future game designer (it’s his dream job!) Will present us the school desk most “scribbled” in the world, where all the features imaginably useful in theHUD of a video game, and of course his notebookentirely created for his “video game”.
In this, we will live the adventure of our hero, Wrightwhich will have to save the kingdom and the princess from a super evil demon who suddenly attacked with his mighty army. It is not so much the originality of the story that is striking, as the conception of the idea to develop everything as if it were played with paper and pencil, which during the playthrough he left room for several goodies it’s at found nothing short of brilliant.
The Hero’s Journey
Our hero without blemish and without fear, however, as soon as he meets the demon will be thrown away, and after losing his powerful sword, he will have to embark on a journey not only to reach the demon again, but also to strengthen himself gradually. Guided by Kenta, who will make us from narrator, we will pass from bottom to bottomfrom place to place (there is also a map of the world!), defeating enemiesusing the weird objects that we will find, and clearly solving small puzzles (some very nice and original, others that will bring to mind old glories of the past). Let’s also remember that we are playing in a notebook, so here come the features related to the pencil and the eraser! We will be able to write, draw and more directly on the game notebook … and who knows if all this will also have a practical use!
Clearly, being the narrator as well as the Game Master, Kenta will be a focal presence in the game: he will tell us about the events, he will explain the mechanics, he will give us advice, but above all will wear masks while rolling the characters that we will meet in the game … and yes, will talk a lot.
So much. As pleasant as it is to scroll through the various dialogues and discover the various funny facets, this dynamic makes the gameplay limp a lot, above all because it will often interrupt “the action” and because Kenta’s text cloud is very small: in the balloon there is room for a few words, so to say a complete sentence, even a short one, it will be necessary to scroll through the dialogues, for example by pressing 3 times the confirmation key. As they say, too much is good. It is not clear if this is a gimmick to increase the play timethat does not arrive at 10 hours (and therefore it would have been shorter without), but it is still an acceptable longevity and appropriate to the context.
The fantasy we like
All in all, despite obvious limitations (some ingeniously inserted as features), RPG Time: The Legend of Wright it proved to be an avant-garde and very pleasant game to play: light-hearted, creative, unusual, and entertained enough. This was possible thanks and above all to the light atmosphere created by the graphic style, the context, and the tantalizing and well-placed soundtrack. Let’s not forget that there is actually a degree of challengeabove all linked to the part of ingenuity rather than the naked and raw role-playing aspect, so even the methods of resolution are at the same time atypical and intriguing.

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright (Tested on Switch)
7.5Total Score
RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is certainly a very original title, which despite its structural limitations juggles in an excellent way from the points of view related to fantasy, goodies, and funny gimmicks. A very atypical role-playing game that seeks at the same time to rejuvenate the media and take us back to the good old days of school. A real shame for the poor longevity of the adventure, and the poor management of the dialogues (available entirely in English) which are structured to require an excessive amount of time and clicks to be read. All in all, however, it is a highly recommended title for those who are not looking for something too demanding, but above all original and carefree.
