LEIPZIG (dpa-AFX) – Two weeks after the sometimes chaotic “lateral thinking” demo, Leipzig is again facing numerous rallies on Saturday. According to the city, opponents of the corona policy have registered a meeting with 250 participants. There is loud protest against this. The action network “Leipzig takes place” alone calls for three rallies in central squares of the city. According to their own statements, the police will be deployed with a large number. Any violations of the corona rules should be punished consistently.
A total of eight meetings in the city have been announced for Saturday. As the police announced on Friday, they will receive support from forces from Baden-Württemberg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Bremen, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt and the federal police. Depending on the development, a police helicopter will circle over the city. Water cannons and an equestrian team are also available.
According to the police, the protest meeting against the Corona measures should be surrounded with bars; access is controlled. In Saxony, meetings with a maximum of 1000 participants are currently only permitted. The police announced that their focus would be on “separating peaceful and unpeaceful participants” in the various gatherings.
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution had previously reported that both right-wing and left-wing extremist camps were mobilizing for Leipzig. For the demonstration against the Corona measures, the authority expects a “heterogeneous protest”, as it has also shown at previous events of the “lateral thinking” scene. Reich citizens and violent groups such as hooligans could also come to Leipzig.
According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, left-wing extremists will also participate in the counter-protest. Attacks on vehicles or railway systems in connection with the demo events are possible. However, there are no specific indications of planned crimes from the left-wing extremist spectrum.
Two weeks ago the “lateral thinking” movement held a large demonstration in Leipzig. According to the police, at least 20,000 people came, and the “Counted” initiative even assumed 45,000 participants. Hardly anyone adhered to the mask requirement. The city eventually disbanded the meeting.
When the crowd then wanted to force a march around the Leipziger Ring, there was scuffle and pyrotechnics flew. In the end, the police let the crowds move, even though elevators are currently not allowed. The event triggered a violent dispute in the black-green-red coalition in Saxony./bz/DP/fba
