Rossella Fiamingo is on Imane Khelif’s side. “She is a woman and if she has been authorized, obviously, she can compete. What is not fair is the treatment she has received”, observes the Italian fencer in an interview with the newspaper The Republic.
“All athletes know the tests we undergo before any competition. Even more so at the Olympics,” notes Fiamingo, who won gold in team epee at the Games underway in Paris.
The fencer from Catania therefore takes the defense of the Algerian boxer, accused by many of being unsuitable to compete with other female athletes.
Khelif reached the women’s welterweight gold medal final amid controversy, which erupted especially after her round of 16 match, which saw her eliminate Italian Angela Carini.
The Italian government – starting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – has taken a stand against the Algerian boxer. Fiamingo, on the other hand, is in solidarity with her: “They called her trans, accused her of cheating when she didn’t do anything wrong,” he says. “She just competed and won by respecting the rules. I hope these Games end well, for Imane.”
