The Motomami World Tour of the star with the most international projection of Spanish music stops in several cities in Spain this summer
Rosalía (San Cugat del Vallés, 1993) returned last March with a new album, ‘Motomami’ (Sony), now a global artist. Three years after ‘El mal Quiero’, that girl who fell in love with flamenco after listening to Camarón in some friends’ car is the biggest star in current Spanish music.
The more than 20 million followers on Instagram, the star programs on American television and the follow-up almost every minute of her life are the new reality of Rosalía, immersed these days in the Motomami World Tour, almost fifty concerts in Europe , Latin America and the United States. Today she arrives in Valencia, on July 19 and 20 she will be in Madrid; 23 and 24, in Barcelona; on the 27th, in Bilbao; on the 29th, in A Coruña, and on August 1st, she will perform in Palma de Mallorca, before traveling to Mexico. The singer attends this newspaper by phone in a talk that she will end abruptly when her mobile phone runs out of battery.
– Where do I get it? How is she?
I am in Valencia. I am very happy with how the public is receiving the music, the songs that people can listen to on the album and the unreleased songs that can only be heard live. It is very exciting to have been able to go through the process of preparing this show and trying to translate the songs into stage values and to be able to share them now.
-How is the show?
I don’t like to predispose people who are going to see it too much. I prefer it to be a different experience for each one. I can tell you that there are many months of work behind it, we have taken care of all the details. There are songs from ‘Motomami’, but also from other previous projects. A choreographic, musical and visual work that excites all of us who have done it.
–When you are on tour, can you live or do you get into a loop in which there is nothing but work?
–Today I was talking about it with some friends… I always try to find moments. Today we have gone by boat through the ‘arrosars’, through the rice fields, and I have had a great time. I try to find time to learn from the places I go. Traveling is one of the ways I like to learn the most. There is a lot of work behind the show, but I try not to stop living experiences that later make you, as a performer, more inspired.

«Now I am more exposed, before I did not have a paparazzi waiting for me outside the house»
-Your life in recent years is a journey.
-As it is, you’re absolutely right. Actually, for better and for worse. You learn by traveling, as I was saying, but sometimes you also miss the day-to-day life you have when you’re close to your family, anchored in the same place. I feel so grateful to be able to make my music and dedicate myself to what I like that I make it very happy. Although at this moment I have to be more nomadic, I enjoy it just the same.
–In ‘Motomami’ you reflect on the toll of fame. Is being up there what you expected?
-I do not know what you mean. Actually, I have been preparing myself all these years to dedicate myself to music. And I’m lucky to make music that I believe in. My great illusion was this, above all I am grateful. I concentrate on that gratitude, I try not to forget it even though sometimes the environment is hostile.

-Are there Motopapis? As they are?
-Ha, ha, Of course, you will tell me how they are, how each one feels. I see Motopapis at the shows, and Motomamis and Moto of everything. Let each one feel as he wants. I have proposed a name on an album that for me concentrates an energy and a moment. That’s ‘Motomami’. I have launched an idea, something that I felt and from there everyone can develop what they want. I love that this happens.

–There is a voice note from your grandmother in a song on the album saying that «in the first place there is God and then the family». Are they values that you share?
My grandmother is a woman I greatly admire. She inspires me. That voice note made a lot of sense within the ‘Motomami’ puzzle. I have memories of how my grandmother liked Pavarotti and my mother Patti Smith.
–How has your life changed since ‘El mal Quiero’?
-Now I’m more exposed, that’s the biggest change. Before I didn’t have a paparazzi waiting for me outside the studio, the hotel, my house.

«The Internet is a blessing because it allows direct communication with people»
–Can music be made with algorithms?
–Music can be made as you decide you want and feel like doing it. Music is infinite. It depends on the artist, there are some who have experimented with making music based on algorithms and the result is very interesting. Others like to work from a much more organic place. There are artists who care more about numbers than others…
– Is there a moment in your career when you know you have made your dream come true?
-I feel that my illusion was to dedicate myself to making music, today I can develop the projects in which I believe. From the moment I was able to make music, in the studio or on a big or small stage, I was already happy. I’m still doing what I was doing ten years ago: working really hard, listening to a lot of music and preparing.
-Has the fear crossed your mind that one day they’ll get tired of Rosalía?
I feel very happy after three years without having released a record. People have understood the project, they are coming to the concerts and they are giving me a lot of affection. All I have is gratitude and love in return.
–Who is the person that has made you meet the most in this time?
-There are so many people that I admire that I have been able to meet… Saying only one would not be fair. Juan Luis Guerra, Caetano Veloso… Meeting them has been incredible because I admire them a lot.
– He lives on the internet. How are you doing?
I grew up with the internet, I take it naturally. It is a tool that allows artists to communicate directly, without intermediaries, with people who enjoy music. That is a blessing.
Is there machismo in the music industry?
-Women have a stronger voice in the industry.
