Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will no longer seek to run for President of the United States for the Republican Party. In an announcement made on the X network, he said that he withdrew from the party primaries and that he will support former president Donald Trump.
“If there was anything I could do to produce a favorable outcome, more campaign stops, more interviews, I would do it. But I can't ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don't have a clear path to victory. . Accordingly, I am suspending my campaign today,” DeSantis said in a video.
The withdrawal takes place on the eve of the second stage of the Republican primaries in New Hampshire, which takes place on Tuesday (23). In the Iowa caucus, last Monday (15), DeSantis came in second place, with 21.2% of the vote. Trump got 51%.
“Trump is superior to the current president, Joe Biden. That is clear. I signed a pledge to support the Republican candidate and I will fulfill that pledge. He has my support because we cannot go back to the old Republican guard of the past,” DeSantis said this Sunday.
Last year, DeSantis was re-elected governor of Florida with a lead of more than 1.5 million votes, the largest margin in the state in more than 40 years. As a result, he was seen as the candidate most capable of defeating Trump.
However, his performance with the electorate was below expectations and he lost space to the former president. According to political analysts, DeSantis faced the problem of competing with Trump for an electorate with a similar profile.
With DeSantis' departure, the race will be between Donald Trump and Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina and former US ambassador to the UN. The former president's opponent is looking for moderate Republicans and those with higher socioeconomic status.
Haley received support weeks ago from Chris Sununu, the popular governor of New Hampshire and avowed anti-Trump, with whom she has been touring the state as polls have increasingly brought her closer to the former president.
After finishing third in Iowa, Haley declared the Republican race was already a “two-man race,” referring to her and Trump and removing DeSantis from the equation.
