A high-speed train derails, half of Italy is paralyzed during the long weekend of June 2 and 3 days later no information or partial reconstruction of what happened in the Serenissima tunnel, a strategic hub for rail transport between Rome and the Adriatic and between Rome is the southern route of the country.
Officially for Rete Ferroviaria Italiani it was “a misdirection of the tail locomotive of the train 9311 Turin-Naples, which remained vertical”. Stuff that not even in the best of Russia a train accident would have been so described.
Prenestina derailment: the hypotheses being examined by the Prosecutor’s Office
In addition to the railway misinformation, something leaks from the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office which opened a file and carried out a series of appraisals over the weekend, before proceeding with the release of part of the train. The first reconstruction sees 2 hypotheses: a break in the bogie of the tail locomotive, or a failure of the track dragged by the train up to the switch. However, the effects were devastating: the tail locomotive rolled frightfully, first derailing and then hit the vault of the tunnel, tore the cables of the overhead network and destroyed every safety element of the system that regulates the trains. And that the situation was much more complex and that the effects minimized by RFI were more serious appeared from the first inspection. And this is the real reason why the scene of the derailment and each component was placed under immediate seizure by the prosecutor.
Prenestina derailment: RFI talks about “diversion”
However, this happened on Friday night but for the Railways it was not enough for a truthful operation and to explain with the mandatory details for a public company, the effects that the devastation of the tunnel would have had on the railway traffic of the Rome junction. So from Saturday dozens of trains began to accumulate an announced delay and the bridge of June 2 has turned into a nightmare.
