Former mayor of Fortaleza was chosen in a vote against current governor Izolda Cela, PT’s favorite
The PDT defined the former mayor of Fortaleza Roberto Cláudio as the party’s representative in the electoral race for the government of Ceará. In a vote among party members on Monday (18.Jul.2022), Cláudio was chosen with 55 votes against the 29 of the current governor Izolda Cela.
On his Twitter account, Roberto Cláudio stated that participating in the race as a candidate for governor of Ceará is a “noble mission”. At the post, the pre-candidate also thanked the other names that were in the running for the pre-candidacy, including Cela.
Izolda, on Twitter, said that respects the decision of the PDT and that it will follow “with strength and courage” and that he will continue to work until the end of his term.
Other names mentioned by the PDT —the federal deputy Mauro Filho and the president of the General Assembly of Ceará, Evandro Leitão — withdrew from the race for the position.
PDT vs PT in Ceará
according to Power 360 showed in June, relations between PT and PDT are fragile. PT supporters were in favor of Izolda Cela’s candidacy, while pedetistas supported Roberto Cláudio’s candidacy.
From January 2015 until April 2022, Ceará was governed by a coalition between the two parties. Cela (PDT) was vice-governor of Camilo Santana (PT) during the period.
The governor’s approach and familiarization with the PT side of the ticket may explain the PT’s preference for Cela.
On April 2, 2022, Camilo Santana resigned from office in order to run for the Senate.
