Robert Lewandowski has confirmed he wants to leave Bayern Munich this summer. The Polish striker refuses to extend his contract, which expires next year.
“We have to find a solution that is best for both sides,” Lewandowski told Sky after the last league game of the season against VfL Wolfsburg (2-2). ,,I have told the club that if an offer comes in, we have to think about it. Also for the club.”
Lewandowski has been playing in Germany since 2010, first for Borussia Dortmund and since 2014 for Bayern. He received a miniature version of a cannon for the seventh time in Wolfsburg on Saturday, the prize for the top scorer in the Bundesliga. Lewandowski equaled Gerd Müller, who also became the top scorer of the German league seven times.
The Pole has scored 35 goals this season. The number 2 of the top scorers list, Patrik Schick of Bayer Leverkusen, finished with 24 goals. Last season, Lewandowski scored no fewer than 41 goals, improving Müller’s record from the 1971-1972 season. ‘Der Bomber’, who died in August last year, scored 40 goals that season.
Lewandowski is strongly associated with FC Barcelona. According to German media, his agent has already reached an agreement with the Spanish club of Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong about a three-year contract. Lewandowski would then become a competitor of Depay.
Bayern Munich technical director Hasan Salihamidzic said Lewandowski had told him he wanted “something new”. “But the fact is that he has a contract until the summer of next year.”
