Berlin – Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) travels to the American capital Washington for two days. The Economics and Climate Protection Minister wanted to leave on Monday evening. “The focus of the trip is the overall situation after Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the associated issues of security policy, energy security and sanctions,” the ministry said on Monday.
Among others, Habeck wants to meet US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Special Climate Representative John Kerry, Trade Representative Katherine Tai, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and representatives of German business.
“Transatlantic cohesion is more important than ever these days,” said Habeck. The international community stands together and acts resolutely and together. «We support Ukraine to the best of our ability. We are responding to Russian aggression with clear and targeted sanctions.” It is crucial right now that the USA and Europe stand together, said Habeck. «Our partnership, built on the foundation of democracy, freedom and justice, is unbreakable. We throw them into the balance as a geopolitical weight to defy the warmonger Putin. It is precisely the Ukrainians’ desire for freedom that Putin fears.”
In the transatlantic alliance, too, energy security issues are at stake, explained Habeck. “Especially Germany must reduce its import dependency on Russia.” The most important key to energy sovereignty is the global shift towards more renewable energies and energy efficiency. “The expansion of renewable energies is a question of national and European security.” (dpa)
