DThe nationwide seven-day incidence has continued to fall. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week on Monday morning as 808.8. For comparison: the previous day the value was 834.3, a week ago 1080.0, a month ago 1706.3.
The health authorities in Germany reported 20,482 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. A week ago it was 30,789.
When considering the values, it must be taken into account that individual states do not report data every weekday, and at weekends, for example, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Saxony do not, or only partially, report data. Fewer reports are also to be expected on public holidays. This in turn leads to late registrations on the following days. A comparison of daily values is therefore becoming increasingly difficult. In addition, experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – due to overworked health authorities and because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only these count in the statistics.
According to the new information, 11 deaths were recorded in Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there had been 13 deaths. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with the Sars-CoV-2 virus rose to 132,953.
The RKI has counted 23,437,145 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The RKI gave the number of recovered people as 20,085,800.
Relaxation in Austria
Germany’s neighbor Austria further relaxed its corona protection measures. Since Saturday there has no longer been a general obligation to wear masks indoors. The regulations have also been dropped in cable cars or excursion boats. Mouth and nose protection is still recommended there.
FFP2 masks must continue to be worn in grocery stores, public transport, offices, banks, hospitals and nursing homes. In addition, anyone can go back to clubs, bars and major events without proof of vaccination or recovery. The seven-day incidence of new infections in Austria was recently similar to Germany at less than 900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Corona deaths in Shanghai
The Chinese metropolis of Shanghai reported the first three deaths in the recent corona outbreak. As the city government announced this Monday, it was three older patients who were also otherwise ill. Her age was given as 89 to 91 years.
Most recently, the province of Jilin in northeast China reported two Covid deaths in mid-March, which were considered the first in China in more than a year. However, there are ambiguities as to which causes of death are given, especially in the elderly or chronically ill, and which cases actually appear in the statistics.
There has been an extensive lockdown in Shanghai since the end of March. The metropolis is at the center of the currently ongoing largest corona wave in China since the beginning of the pandemic more than two years ago. Most of the 26 million inhabitants are not allowed to leave their homes. There are complaints of poor medical care and inadequate food supplies.
In the course of the lockdown, all residents are tested again and again. Anyone who is infected must go to a quarantine facility. In Shanghai, among other things, exhibition halls with tens of thousands of beds have been set up for this purpose. It is unclear how long the lockdown will last.
Authorities reported that more than 2,400 confirmed new infections and more than 19,800 asymptomatic cases were again detected in Shanghai on Sunday. The port city counts the majority of the new infections counted nationwide in China.
