The number of reported positive corona tests last week was almost half higher than the week before. The number of reports increased in all regions and in all age groups. “It seems that the expected autumn increase in the coronavirus has started,” the RIVM said.
In the past week, 158,000 people were tested, nearly 18,000 of them were positive. Last week, 12,000 people tested positive. As a result, the outbreak is now at its highest level since late August.
The number of people who tested positive was 10.3 percent. Last week, that percentage was still 8.3 percent. The reproduction number (the R-number) also rose again, now to 1.12. That is the highest value since July.
According to the RIVM, the number of corona infections is increasing in all age groups and in all regions. “Most reports come from age groups under 50.” The virus was found last week in 1434 children aged 5 to 9 years. That is 55 percent more than the week before. Among 45- to 49-year-olds, the number of new cases rose by almost 62 percent. An increase of almost 75 percent was seen among the seventies and almost 80 percent among the over-90s, but these are still fairly small numbers.
The highest numbers of reported corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants came from the regions of IJsselland, Gelderland-Midden, Hollands-Midden and Gelderland-South.
Earlier this afternoon it was announced that the number of corona patients in Dutch hospitals had risen to 512 on Tuesday. That is 15 more than Monday, reports the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS). This is the highest number since September 23.
In the nursing wards, the number of patients with Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, increased by 15 to 374. There are 138 corona patients on the ICUs, the same as on Monday. In the past 24 hours, 59 new corona patients entered the nursing wards. Ten people were brought in on the ICs.
The number of deaths did drop. In the past seven days, RIVM received a message that 24 people had died as a result of their infection. In the weekly figures, that is the lowest number since the end of July.
RIVM speaks of an ‘expected autumn increase’. Many corona measures in the Netherlands have been lifted since 25 September. For example, cafes and restaurants can open fully again and groups of people no longer have to keep 1.5 meters away. However, a corona ticket is required for many catering and events. With that QR code, people can show that they have been fully vaccinated, recovered from corona or have recently tested negative.
Unvaccinated people can take a free corona test at Testing for Access to get a corona admission ticket. Last week, 368,000 appointments were booked with Testing for Access, the organization reports. Just like last week, just over 90,000 test appointments were made on Friday and Saturday was the busiest day, with 118,000 test appointments. “The majority of people indicated that they wanted a test before visiting a restaurant or cafe.”
