Riot Games resolves the lawsuit that began in 2018.
Riot Games, publisher of League of Legends, finally reached a settlement on the 2018 class action action against gender discrimination. The lawsuit was filed by two former Riot employees, Melanie McCracken and Jess Negrón. Both accused the company of gender discrimination and sexual harassment.
The Washington Post now reports that Riot Games has resolved the gender discrimination lawsuit with state agencies and former employees. The company will pay $ 80 million to class action members, with any employee or contractor identified as a woman qualified for the payment. However, these employees should have worked at the company from 2014 to date.
About 2,300 employees are eligible for the $ 80 million settlement, while a separate $ 20 million will go to plaintiffs’ legal fees. This will increase the total amount Riot will have to pay for the lawsuit to $ 100 million. Riot will be monitored by a third-party individual, who will oversee HR complaints across the company and how they are handled.
The individual must be approved by Riot and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). The goal is to improve the company’s practices. The DFEH had already locked in a $ 10 million deal in 2019, arguing that the victims should be entitled up to $ 400 million.
