Rio de Janeiro will not require a medical prescription to vaccinate children, as proposed by the Ministry of Health if the application of the immunizing agent is authorized. This statement is made by the mayor of the city, Eduardo Paes. In a publication on Twitter, the mayor emphasizes that, according to the Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA), it is “mandatory for children to be vaccinated in the cases recommended by the health authorities”.
“Here you won’t need a certificate to vaccinate children. See what the first paragraph of Article 14 of the Child and Adolescent Statute says!” says Paes. The publication was made today (24), after the Ministry of Health defended the requirement of medical prescription and parental authorization for children to receive the vaccine against covid-19 in Brazil.
The vaccination of children with the immunizing agent Pfizer, had the endorsement of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), on the last day 16. After decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the Ministry of Health informed that it will comment on the inclusion of immunization in the vaccination plan against covid-19 on January 5th.
For the ministry, vaccination should not be compulsory and, for the application of the immunizing agent, “medical prescription and authorization will be required of parents or guardians, upon signature of an assent term”.
The folder opened a query, published on the ministry website yesterday (23) at 23:59. It is possible to participate until the 2nd of January.
The ministry adds that the inclusion of the age group from 5 to 11 years old in the National Plan for the Operationalization of Vaccination should prioritize children with permanent disabilities or comorbidities, as well as those who live “in a home with people at high risk for severe covid evolution-19 ”. In the case of children without comorbidity, the order of priority goes from the oldest to the youngest, starting with the group aged 10 to 11 years.
Letter from the Health Secretaries
In a letter released today, the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) said that states will not require “any medical document” to apply the vaccine. “Scientists around the world point to the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine for children! It has even started to be applied to boys and girls from several countries around the world”.
