The expectation of customers to get their hands on their Rimac model Nevera is about to run out. After several weeks of delay, the first examples of the electric supercar of the Croatian brand are about to leave the production lines: to announce it was Mate Rimac, number one of Bugatti-Rimac, who spoke of a super complex project and who confirmed that within two months the first units of the model will be delivered. Also Rimac was hit by the crisis caused by the shortage of microchips and semiconductors, which is also the hidden reason behind the delays at Nevera.
“People may be wondering why there is a problem with a car with such a low volume – his words to the microphones of Autonews – We make many parts by ourselves, including all car electronics. The hardware and software are all ours. We have to source thousands and thousands of electronic components for each car. And this is proving to be a challenge due to the lack of chips ”. Rimac himself added that the Croatian house has been forced in recent months to modify some projects and to change some parts of the cars just because she couldn’t get the chips and processors she needed.
Putting aside the microchip crisis issue, the future of Bugatti-Rimac will necessarily have to look to electric. And if for Rimac it may be simpler, for Bugatti the question is more complicated: for decades the success of the French brand was based on the W16, revolutionizing everything in four and four eights and switching out of the blue to electric can be counterproductive. And even Mate Rimac agrees: “The W16 is an extraordinary powertrain that created the hypercar business. The simplest thing for us would be to grab the Nevera, hit a Bugatti logo on it and be done with it. But I am against it. I’m an electric car type, but I think a Bugatti should still have a combustion engine for some time. But it will be developed in a way that is financially sustainable. With the Nevera, for example, we developed everything from scratch – you won’t find a part in that car that you can find on another car, and we did it on a tight budget. We will do the same for future Bugattis, creating truly exceptional products that cannot be compared to anything else on the market but without spending billions ”.
The number one of the alliance between Bugatti and Rimac also spoke about the opening of one new R&D facility in Zagrebin Croatia, which will create thousands of new jobs. “We have gone from having a handful of people serving us to having over 1,000. Now, one thing I’ve also learned is to avoid making predictions, because if I told you now that we’re going to have 10,000 employees that would be a huge promise to keepas circumstances sometimes change – has explained – But if you don’t do exactly what you said three years ago, people will tell you that you are a liar. “
