And six years later, Rihanna reappears. Perhaps it has not been as expected: a powerful dance song. Nope, Lift Me Up, which is the name of the song, offers high emotional voltage, a ballad where the singer implores: “Lift me up, hug me. / Keep me close, safe and sound.” The song was published at six in the morning this Friday and the star’s followers have filled social networks with messages such as: “she has made me cry with emotion.”
The latest album by the singer born in Barbados 36 years ago is Anti, of 2016. From that same year is the song sledgehammer, from the soundtrack of Star Trek: Beyond. Since then, only occasional collaborations, always as a guest, not as the main soloist, as in WildThoughts, by DJ Khaled; Loyaltyby Kendrick Lamar, or, the last, believeit, by PartyNextDoor, in 2020.
But the star is once again in front. A month ago it was announced that she will star in the Super Bowl halftime concert, the sporting show with the largest audience. It will be February 12, 2023. And now it arrives Lift Me Up, their first song in six years, theme song from the soundtrack of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which opens on November 11 in Spain.
lift me up (Lift Me Up) is a perfect song for Rihanna’s vocal display. With the main instrumentation of a piano and some strings, the singer displays a repertoire that goes from whisper to power passing through falsetto. The song ends on a spiritual soulful note as Rihanna squirms singing over a choir. The lyrics are simple: “Burning in a hopeless dream. / Hug me when you go to sleep. / Keep me in the warmth of your love.”
The song is written by Rihanna together with Tems, Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogle, director of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. According to the press release, the song is a tribute “to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman,” the star of the first film of Black Panther, who died in 2020 at the age of 43.
“After speaking with Ryan and hearing how he was going to approach the direction of the film, I wanted to write something that portrayed a warm embrace from all the people I have lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me, so to hear her stream this song is such an honor,” Tems, lead songwriter, said in a press release.
Rihanna is a unique case in the entertainment industry. It emerged in 2003 as a kind of version low cost of the most commercial facet of Beyoncé. The boost in popularity the song gave it umbrella (2007) in the company of Jay-Z. Once at the top, he decided to approach more experimental music. There she was already creating a non-conformist artist with creative aspirations. When she found herself in that privileged position (favored by both the public and the sybaritic critics) she decided to erase herself from music… and become even more millionaire.
The singer has been focused in recent years on the world of fashion, launching her own brand, Fenty, a cosmetics, fashion and underwear firm. But not just any firm. The specialists have praised the differential and inclusive concept with which the singer has broken into a world where a stylized rigidity is usually lived. Rihanna has models of all races, plus sizes, with more or less breasts, cellulite, stretch marks, skinheads, prosthetics, women trans… A realistic concept in the face of the artificiality of traditional fashion. And he has succeeded. Since then, the singer appears on the lists of Forbes as one of the richest singers… basically for her work as a fashion businesswoman.
Now, and after becoming a mother (last May), she begins her plan to return to music, which will surely include a tour in 2023 or 2024.
