The Dutch Ide Schelling (Bora Hansgrohe) won the sprint in the second stage of the Itzulia Basque Country, a 193.8-kilometer route through Navarre lands starting in Viana and finishing in Leitza after which Schelling himself is the new leader of the race. Rigoberto Urán (EF) came in seventh place and is shaping up to be the best Colombian in the race.
Urán, the best Colombian
Schelling, one of the best sprinters in the race, has won in a group of 30 runners who had been ahead after cutting the bulk of the peloton in the five kilometers down the Alto de Arkiskil, a port that, despite being of Second, he failed to break the large group.
The podium of the stage is also the overall podium, in which the great favourite, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), is fifth, 8 seconds behind the leader.
Rigoberto Urán (EF) entered with the same time as Schelling. So did Sergio Higuita (Bora), who finished in 14th place. Daniel Felipe Martínez (Ineos) suffered a puncture with five kilometers to go and ended up finishing in 67th place, 37 seconds behind the leader.
