Rider, a new investigation: widespread irregularities and fake accounts
The case of the racket of the rider. An investigation by the prosecution of Milan brought to light irregularities of all kinds. On 823 workers check it, fine 23 they were gods illegal immigrants. There are – we read in La Stampa – those who have been forced to shell out 300 euros for the simple change of a wheel or a battery pack. Who had to advance a thousand euros to pay for one of those bumpy bikes that whiz around the city every day, so fast and with wheels so large that they look like mopeds. In one case – which the Carabinieri want to investigate but which would seem isolated – a Pakistani cycle delivery man even declared that he work for 12 or 14 hours per day, in the sun or in the rain, even on Sundays and on holidays, in exchange for meals and 100 euros per month. He too, of course, with a fake account provided by a fellow exploiter. It is the racket of the “caporalato tra rider”, born with the explosion of delivery during the first wave of the pandemic, and which, beyond the numbers that can be detected, seems to have taken huge size.
To the point that – after the filing of the first investigation which led to the platforms to pay fines of 90 thousand euros and to hire riders with para-subordinate contracts – the Environment, health and work pool of the Milan prosecutor’s office – continues La Stampa – has opened a new file of inquiry. Certainly, to stem such a widespread phenomenon, the intervention of the delivery platforms would also be needed, which are collaborating with the investigations. Although some, like Deliveroo, still refuse to upload the photo of the rider in the customers app. Thus, it is much more difficult to understand whether the person making the delivery corresponds to the owner of the profile and therefore of the contract. The hypothesis is that there are supply channels for battery packs, often stolen from scooters and bicycles to assisted pedallingused to modify the vehicles in specialized centers and then supplied to cyclists at a cost that can reach i One thousand Euro.
