According to a police spokesperson, the man from Eritrea who lived in the asylum seekers’ center in Overloon was on his way to Boxmeer station to visit family. He died instantly, according to police.
The accident happened around 7.40 am, on the service road along the provincial road between Boxmeer and Sint Anthonis. The driver of the tractor, a 25-year-old man, has been arrested. “He is now being interrogated by us,” said the spokesman.
Just after noon, two other residents of the asylum seekers’ center come by bicycle to take a look at the site of the accident. One of the men wants more information about what exactly happened that early morning. When he hears what has happened, he puts his bicycle on the roadside and stares blankly for a few minutes – in shock. ,,He was a friend of mine”, he stammers later.
The officer at the red and white barrier tape says he is not allowed to say any more at the moment, because the investigation into the cause is still ongoing.
