Daniel Ricciardo He’s a big fan of the Nascar league, and as a boy he cheered for Dale Earnhardt. That tragic February 18th 2001 is a date that the Australian and motorsport in general will never forget. The Intimidator, seven times winner of the championship, lost his life at the age of 49 in the last lap of the Daytona 500, due to a contact that involved two other cars and which – at least at first glance – seemed violent but not lethal. Ricciardo remembers very well that day and the tears he shed for the death of his idol: from then on he decided to run with number 3, to remember him. And for the Austin Grand Prix Honey Badger he wanted to do even more.
The McLaren driver, in fact, will race with a black “helmet”, very similar to Earnhardt’s (in the photo below), of which he also incorporates the writing on the sides. The helmet bears the signature of the designer JMD.
